This Super Smash Bros Ultimate tier list is meant to give you a solid idea of who the best characters to play competitively are. Keep in mind that we are looking at the top of the game's skill range, meaning that these are the characters in the hands of professional players. We also invite you to look for our guides on each to better grasp what the character is capable of and if they will fit your playstyle.
To develop this SSBU tier list, we looked through professional competitors' general opinions and each character's available moves. We also update this tier list as new balance patches are released, and competitive players shift the scene's paradigm. Offline and Online events can impact it, and we want to hear your voice in our socials and forums.
This tier list is meant to mirror professional players' and community figures' current standing opinions from their tier list videos, tweets, and writeups to the current top player's performance in online and offline competitions.
We adopted the consensus of an "S" to "F" ranking for this Smash Ultimate tier listing. With S-tier characters being the agreed-upon best characters at the top level of competition and F-tier characters being mostly useless or otherwise too difficult to master to be worth such effort. That is not to say they are not worth playing if you find them fun. There are plenty of great players with lower-tier characters that perform at a high level. Do not be discouraged by it. Instead, use it to your advantage!
As mentioned previously, this Smash Bros tier list will be updated as new characters are added, balance changes come out, and the general impression from players changes. Small changes in the game balance might have a butterfly effect on the ranking as characters matchup change. That is why we always carefully revise this Smash tier list regularly to ensure it is still at the forefront of competitive developments.
