One day a meteorite landed near Ness's hometown Onett. Soon after, his neighbor Porky came to him to ask for his help. His brother Picky had gone missing as they were headed to see the meteorite up close. The two, along with Porky's dog King, head to the meteorite to find Picky. Once reunited, Picky said that he believed Porky was the one who had gone missing in their expedition. As the discussion was getting started, an insect-looking figure approached the three and spoke directly to Ness. He explains his name was Buzz-Buzz, and he was from the future, sent to the past to warn Ness about the threat of the Giygas and tell him about a prophecy he was at the center of.
On their back to Porky's and Picky's home, Picky, Porky, Buzz-Buzz, and Ness are confronted by a pink figure named Starman Jr. They confirm Buzz-Buzz's prophecy and engages the group in combat. After defeating him with a mixture of physical and psi attacks, the groups rush back into town and Porky's and Picky's home. Sadly, as they reach the house, Porky's and Picky's mother Lardna mistook Buzz-Buzz for a common bug and lethally injured him. With the last of his strengths, Buzz-Buzz gave Ness as much information as possible to help him on the adventure he would now need to face.
One of the standout aspects of Ness is his special attacks. PK Thunder, Flash, and Fire are all incredibly good tools to either juggle opponents, deal damage at a safe distance, edge guard, or secure a knockout. This also extends to his aerial capability, making him a threat across the entire stage. Finally, his grab and throws are above average thanks to their speed and are a handy tool in close-quarter situations.
But he also has a few glaring weaknesses. Ness is very vulnerable to opponents who have a keen eye for punishing mistakes. Which is worsen by his limited ground mobility and relatively low-speed projectiles. Meaning that Ness has to keep its distance and be the one dictating the tempo of a fight at all times or risk being put in a high damage situation and KOed.
