Biography

Palutena’s first appearance was in the 1996 Famicom Disk System game Kid Icarus. There, she’s introduced as the Goddess of Light and a direct foil to Medusa, the Goddess of Darkness. She loved people and bestowed them Light to make their lives happy. But Medusa hated them and turned to stone whoever she could. Appalled by this, Palutena punished her and banished her to the Underworld. Spiteful, Medusa conspired with monsters to depose her and invade her residence in the Palace in the Sky. She succeeded and imprisoned her, but at the last second Palutena managed to send a bow and an arrow to Pit, who would then go on a quest to free her from her confines.

The storytelling abilities of the creators were greatly hindered by the inferior hardware back in the eighties. But with the most recent release, Kid Icarus: Uprising, Masahiro Sakurai, Smash’s game director, managed to flesh Palutena out well as a character. She’s still the Goddess of Light from the Angel Land, and Pit’s direct superior. While she’s usually refined and dignified, as expected from the goddess, she actually has a playful and mischievous side, which she often shows to Pit. Food is a subject that can make her very excited, as she has a huge appetite. And may Light help the poor soul that so much as dares to mention her name. Palutena is also shown to be very wise, and almost entirely omnipotent and omniscient. She also has a nearly absolute mastery over the element of Light. Being Pit’s “boss”, she’s the one who provides him with his tasks and powers.

Palutena is considered to be a very strong pick in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. She has powerful attacks with high range, excellent airspeed and mobility, and can counterattack. But she tends to get pressured by fast characters and, being tall and lightweight, easily KOd
