After a long day of work and on his way back to his home planet, Olimar's ship, the S.S. Dolphin, is struck by a meteorite and sent hurtling down planetside. After the crash, he assessed the situation. With his life systems failing and a toxic atmosphere made up of mostly oxygen, Olimar had to rebuild his ship within thirty days. While exploring the surface near his ship, he sees a peculiar lifeform. After interacting with it for a few moments, he quickly discovers their potential to help him gather every part he needs to get his ship back into shape. He would call these creatures Pikmin. Once the ship was back into action, he returned to Hocotate.
Soon after landing back on his home planet, Olimar is greeted by his employer from Hocotate Freight. As it turns out, a newly hired member of the company, Louie, had lost a major shipment and put the whole operation in such a large debt that the S.S. Dolphin was to be sold to pay for part of it. But after calculating the worth of a piece of a bottle cap that Olimar had brought in from his travel, his employer commands him to go back and gather as much as he and Louie can to pay off the debt. The two then come back to the earth-like planet and, with the help of the Pikmin, payoff Hocotate Freight's debt.
At the core of Olimar's gameplay is the utilization of his Pikmin, each having a different range, strength, and resistance. With Red, Yellow, Blue, and White, Pikmin can withstand attacks based on fire, electricity, water, and poison damage, respectively. The white Pikmin also deals poison damage. And the final Pikmin, Purple, is the strongest of all but will not cling to opponents. Instead, it applies a knockback.
In the world of competitive Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Olimar is viewed as a specialist character with various powerful matchups but with a big-time investment. Even with a great grasp of the character player might fall prey to Olimar's weaknesses, such as his weak aerial presence and his punishable playstyle.
