To find your favorite fighter and check out your potential opponents

Everyone is here” - Mr. Sakurai and the development team have kept this ambitious promise, so in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, we have all the characters from the previous games of the series. And not only them! Smash DLC characters have been added after the game release to fill the SSBU roster with new gaming personalities. It would be quite hard even to try out them all and almost impossible to master them.

This Smash Bros. guide on DashFight includes the full list of Smash Ultimate characters. Usually, these fighters are sorted by their in-game numbers (based on when they were added to the series) or just alphabetically. Here we decided to divide the whole Super Smash Bros. Ultimate roster into the gaming franchises these guys/girls/creatures came from. In this way, it might be easier for you to find the area of your personal interests and a perfect hero just for you. So, let’s go!

How many characters are in Smash Ultimate?

There are 84 characters in the game. But this number will be different if you count Super Smash Bros. characters in a slightly different way:

  • 82 - if you consider Pokémon Trainer as one fighter and not three (Squirtle, Ivysaur, and Charizard)

  • 77 - if you count only unique characters (the game has 7 Echo Fighters)

The base SSBU game has 76 characters (74 if Pokémon Trainer is one for you). There are 8 Smash Ultimate DLC characters (and we will have more).

So there are so many ways to answer how many characters in Smash Ultimate! It would be easier to check out the list.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate characters by game series

All Smash Ultimate fighters came from 38 (!) game franchises.

Super Mario

It’s a very famous game series. The original adventures of Mario are platformers, but you can meet the same heroes in many other genres. Super Mario characters are present in all games of the Super Smash Bros. series.

  • Mario - the mascot of Nintendo, one of the most famous heroes in the gaming multiverse. Usually, he is on the mission to save his beloved Princess Peach.

  • Princess Peach - the ruler of the Mushroom Kingdom and just a pretty girl. Probably, after being kidnapped for so many times, she learned how to stand up for herself and joined the Smash roster.

  • Daisy - a princess of Sarasaland, a country from Super Mario Land. Daisy participates in quite a lot of other Mario games. She is an Echo Fighter of Peach and copies the moves of that more famous princess.

  • Bowser - the main antagonist of the Super Mario games. He loves Peach so much, but never can succeed in his seemingly perfect kidnapping plan (that Mario!) He is one of the heaviest and strongest Smash characters.

  • Luigi - this guy is not as brave as his brother Mario. You can meet Luigi as a second-player hero in the original games. And he even got his own series - Luigi’s Mansion, where he managed to prove his bravery in fights against ghosts. Maybe this experience helped Luigi get his place in Smash Bros Ultimate roster.

  • Piranha Plant - one of the enemies in the Mario platformers. It appears out of the tubes and wants to eat Mario and Luigi. Probably, Piranha Plant is one of the most unusual Smash Bros characters.

  • Dr. Mario - in a special game series, Mario fights evil pathogenic microbes and bacteria. Dr. Mario is a series of puzzle games, and one of them is free on mobile devices.

  • Bowser Jr. - the son of Bowser. He also likes playing the fun kidnapping game and also can’t succeed. He joined the Smash Ultimate roster with the game Super Smash Bros. 4 (for Wii U and 3DS).

  • Rosalina & Luma - here we have a fairy from the Super Mario games and her star. Rosalina looks like a sweet girl but her wand is very dangerous for other Smash Bros Ultimate characters.

Donkey Kong

First, this ape was the main protagonist in the very first Mario game. Then, Donkey Kong became a hero of his own platformers. Usually, he wants to just live peacefully on his island, but then some mysterious creatures come and steal his bananas. Who can stand such impudence? The Donkey Kong platforms are rather challenging, but you can play special modes or characters for a lower level of difficulty.

  • Donkey Kong
  • Diddy Kong
  • King K. Rool

The Legend of Zelda

It’s one of the most famous franchises of Nintendo. Players explore fairylands, fight evil creatures in dark dungeons, and solve many clever puzzles.

  • Zelda
  • Link
  • Sheil
  • Ganondorf
  • Young Link
  • Toon Link

Metroid

Samus Aran is a super brave girl who takes her fantastic suit and fights awful alien creatures Metroids. They suck all the life from any planet that they appear on. • Samus
  • Dark Samus
  • Zero Suit Samus
  • Ridley

Yoshi

This adorable small dinosaur is tightly connected to the Super Mario series. Yoshi was a sidekick of Mario and Luigi but then got his own games - 2D platformers with a cute style and low difficulty.

In Japan, this game is known as Mother 2. Modern gamers may know the heroes of EarthBound only as Super Smash characters.

  • Ice Climbers

Fire Emblem

In this game series, brave warriors face evil enemies in turn-based battles. Ultimate has quite a few characters from Fire Emblem games.

  • Chrom
  • Lucina
  • Roy
  • Ike

  • Pit
  • Dark Pit
  • Palutena

Sonic is an iconic character - and as part of the Smash Character list, he actually can beat Mario.

  • Sonic

Pikmin

A space adventurer crashes on a strange planet. It’s inhabited with small colorful creatures who help the guy throughout the whole adventure. Different colors of Pikmin indicate abilities of creatures, so the game is full of interesting puzzles.

  • Olimar - he is that spaceman who has found many new friends. In the Smash Bros. character list, Olimar is not the most impressive guy, but he knows many interesting tricks.

R.O.B.

This is the only character in the Smash Ultimate full roster that wasn’t a virtual hero. Nintendo is known for their brave innovation in the game industry. R.O.B. is an actual robot, created for the NES consoles. There were only two games with the use of it.

  • R.O.B.

Animal Crossing

In this game series, players delve into a cute world and become busy with collecting all sorts of things to create useful items and decorate their homes and towns. It’s a cult series that is very demanding on players' time. Be ready to invest hundreds of hours in repetitive but very exciting actions.

  • Villager
  • Isabelle

Mega Man

In this super famous series of platformers/shooters, a blue robot battles evil creatures and many dangerous bosses. The games are very difficult. Players can start with any level and the chosen sequence of bosses changes abilities of the hero and gives advantages or disadvantages for the following stages.

  • Mega Man

Wii Fit Trainer

The Wii console was exceptional by its innovative motion controllers. They opened so many new possibilities in game design! Wii Fit is an interactive game, where players should actually make exercises to get virtual points.

  • Wii Fit Trainer

PunchOut

The hero of PunchOut fits the Super Smash Bros. character list perfectly well! It’s a boxing game series, where players… fight. This experience is quite helpful for SSBU matches.

  • Little Mac

Mii

Nintendo has created these a bit weird virtual humans for quite a few purposes. They are avatars for the Nintendo consoles and they are part of some social games. As Super Smash Ultimate characters, Mii guys replace many heroes from many franchises (such as Tekken) - just change their hair and costume to get someone else. The fighting characteristics will not change though

  • Mii Brawler

Explorations and fights are the core of this game as well. It’s a huge JRPG where players control a hero in a fantasy world. Actually, the guy is called Hero. This was a Nintendo game series but then the game migrated to the Xbox console. The bear and the bird fight against an evil witch in fun platformers.
