Sephiroth

Very few characters caused as much of an uproar as Sephiroth did with his reveal video. An eternal foil to Cloud Strife, he descended upon the Smash characters and started wreaking havoc. As one of the most iconic villains in gaming history, he was more than welcome among Smash’s baddest.Know more

Biography

In the distant past, Sephiroth was a well-respected and highly skilled member of the SOLDIER unit under the Shinra Electric Power Company. His power was unrivaled, and his exploits legendary. He garnered respect both from his comrades and outsiders alike. The cracks in his hero icon began to appear when he seemingly learned the name of his mother, Jenova. On a mission to contain the monster outbreak in Nibelheim, he, Zack Fair, and Cloud Strife discovered containment ponds with Mako-infused monsters and another one that reads “JENOVA.”

Subsequently, his true nature was revealed to him by his former comrade. Genesis Rhapsodos: Sephiroth is an end product of the Jenova Project led by the scientist Professor Hojo. His actual mother, Lucretia Crescent, was injected with Jenova cells during her pregnancy in a bid to create a perfect soldier. After the childbirth, Sephiroth was taken away by the Shirna scientists to be further experimented upon.

This revelation drives him completely mad. He studies the research made by Shinra for weeks and, after coming to the wrong conclusions, burns down the entirety of Nibelheim. In a battle that follows this event, Cloud Strife seemingly kills Sephiroth by submerging him into a pool of Mako, and Shinra declares him dead.

This, however, proves not to be the case, as he crosses the paths of the characters of Final Fantasy VII multiple times during the game: although more often than not, those are just Jenova cells shapeshifted to look like Sephiroth. His main goals are to bring forth the calamity in the form of a giant meteor, force Gaia to use Lifestream as a defense mechanism, and merge with it, essentially gaining control of the whole planet and all living essence on it.

Every piece of media he’s present in depicts him as a tall and lean man with waist-length white hair. His weapon of choice is the legendary katana Masamune, almost twice as long as he is. His mastery of the blade knows no equal, and he’s further strengthened by the Jenova cells within him.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate capitalizes on his unique features, giving his weapon the longest reach in the game. His iconic one wing also makes an appearance and serves as a stat-boost at high percentages.
