Mewtwo

Mewtwo is one of the original 151 Generation 1 Pokemon. He’s the last one that’s obtainable through the conventional matters within the game, as you couldn’t catch Mew without tampering with the game. He’s an extremely strong Legendary Psychic Pokemon that’s considered top-tier within the competitive scene even to this day.

While first appearing in the games themselves, Mewtwo’s origins are thoroughly explained in one of the most popular animated movies in the franchise – Pokemon The First Movie: Mewtwo Strikes Back. Giovanni, leader of the notorious Team Rocket, hires a scientist, proficient in cloning technology, to create a living Pokemon weapon from the DNA of the Mythic Pokemon Mew. The being that’s subsequently created in the laboratory at the Cinnabar Islands is named Mewtwo. While it retains some of the traits and qualities of the original, it also has striking differences – it’s more humanoid than feline, is quite a bit larger, and, unfortunately, lacks any empathy or conscience. What drives it the most is the hunger for battle, the desire for victories.

After Team Rocket failed to contain it within their laboratory, it escaped and took residence in the Cerulean Cave. When it travels, it prefers to settle in places far from humans, as it doesn’t enjoy their company. While it is the single existing specimen of its kind, Mewtwo isn’t the only artificially created Pokemon. It shares this trait with Porygon, Porygon2, Porygon-Z, Castform, Type: Null, and Silvally.

Mewtwo is a Psychic-type Pokemon, and it can learn some of the most powerful moves of this type. The most notable is its signature ability, Psyshock, which can deal physical damage unlike the absolute majority of the other Psychic abilities. Mewtwo was always strong, but the introduction of the Mega Evolutions sent its power level into the overdrive – both Mega Mewtwo X and Mega Mewtwo Y are considered extremely powerful, second only to Mega Rayquaza.

Mewtwo’s Smash debut happened in Melee, and it subsequently returned in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U as a DLC, and in Ultimate as an unlockable character. It was initially considered to be a high-tier fighter, but the weaknesses discovered with time seem to inhibit his ability to shine at the top level.
