Jigglypuff

Jigglypuff is a seemingly unremarkable member of the original 151 Pokemon squad. This pink cute, however, made itself an irreplaceable Smash veteran that’s been a part of every game in the series.Know more

Biography

Jigglypuff originally was one of the 151 Generation 1 Pokemon featured in Pokemon Red, Green, and Blue versions. Nothing set it apart from the others back then – it was a relatively early encounter that could be easily defeated. However, one simple factor played its part in Jigglypuff’s inclusion in the very first Super Smash Bros. game for Nintendo 64 – it resembled Kirby in shape, form, and color. This allowed the creators to reuse the model and animations without the need to change much.

In the original Pokemon games, Jigglypuff was just a Normal-type, which didn’t provide it with many benefits and made it susceptible to some devastating attacks from the types that had an advantage over it. However, in Generation 6, Game Freak introduced a new additional type – Fairy. This became Jiglypuff’s secondary typing, which gave it an advantage over the Pokemon’s alpha predators – Dragons.

One of the notable features of Jigglypuff is its ability to sing. The lullabies it sings put to sleep both humans and Pokemon alike. It’s said that Jigglypuff sings the entire song with a single breath, and has the ability to inflate to let more air into its lungs. The frequency of the lullabies always matches the brain waves of those it’s putting to sleep. However, some creatures are more naturally resistant to it, which endangers Jigglypuff’s life, as it can’t breathe when it sings, and it won’t stop singing until the target is asleep either.

Jigglypuff is one of the “Perfect-attendance crew” in the Smash series. It was introduced in the original Super Smash Bros. game for Nintendo 64 and has been reappearing in every installment ever since. While it’s never been a part of the “Original 8” – the base characters that don’t require unlocks, it still qualifies for perfect attendance.

Jigglypuff’s ability to inflate was reflected in its Smash gameplay: its ability, Puff Up, increases its size to prodigious levels, leaving no room for the opponents to stand their ground. Aside from this, Jigglypuff has a formidable air game, but lacks weight and is easily pushed around. It’s an ultimate glass cannon, a feast or famine fighter – it either racks up KOs early or gets KOd itself.
