After the disappointment for the France offline event, Street Fighter League returns
The France offline Capcom Pro Tour event has passed and the Japanese contingent could not win, but they must put this behind them and focus on the league. The return of the league means there are points on the line and the matches today were as follows:
Following a devastating 0-40 defeat to CYCLOPS Athlete Gaming, Detonation FocusMe came into this match needing a win, and they were in good enough form to get one. They sent Nauman up first who then subsequently lost to Yamaguchi. The second match featured Itabashi Zangief and his Marisa against Momochi's Luke. Momochi hasn't looked convincing so far this season especially with the Modern Luke. Itabashi has also been in a similar spot as he had to come to the conclusion that Zangief is not particularly viable and had since switched to Marisa. However, it seems Itabashi has come to terms with Marisa more than Momochi has with Luke and you could see Itabashi grow into the game as he was able to defeat Momochi.
The anchor match was a little bizarre as Shinobism sent up Johnny, who hasn't seen too much action and hasn't always had the best results, to play against the in-form Fuudo. Perhaps it was a Hail Mary, or Fujimura wasn't feeling good, or something. Whatever the case, the gamble did not pay off as Fuudo, who has been in terrifying form this second half of the season was on hand to clutch things out for his team again and get the win. He defeated Johnny and was able to put behind the unfortunate loss to CAG last week.
While CYCLOPS Athlete Gaming gave an incredible and emotional performance last time around, they fell rather badly against Gyogun. The last time the teams faced each other, CAG were the winners, but this time, Gyogun were able to get their revenge. First, Moke defeated Go1 2-1 in a close match where both players used Chun li. Incidentally, this was the same matchup when the two teams played, only that time it was in the anchor position. Go1 was the winner on the day, but Moke was the better man in this match.
Next was Machabo who earlier seemed to be going through a crisis of confidence, but it seems that has all been shaken off as he was able to defeat Fenritti's JP. It was particularly sad for Fenritti who decided against using his level 3 super in the second round which would have given him a guaranteed win and a stay of execution for at least one more round. But, he gambled and lost as Machabo found the win.
The final match saw Mago, who many have doubted so far, taking the stage against Dogura. If there was something that characterized the performance of CAG, it was mistakes. Fenritti made the wrong choice in the previous game, but Dogura was worse as he dropped combos which could have given him more of a chance, but instead, it gave an already confident Mago more room to impose his playstyle. Mago jumped often which was something of a call out to Dogura as it seemed he had no fear of what Dogura would do in terms of anti-airs.
He was right, and he got the win. This leaves CAG in a pretty difficult position.
Final Scores
Gyogun (40) VS CYCLOPS Athlete Gaming (0)
SAISHUNKAN SOL KUMAMOTO (AWAY) VS FAV GAMING (HOME)
FAV Gaming have been the in form team of the league and they sit on top of the table. However, Saishunkan Sol Kumamoto have been a team that have regularly threatened that top spot. This has a lot to do with Shuto who in Street Fighter V was a menace with Urien and in Street Fighter 6 is a terror with Marisa. He is arguably the most in form player in the league. But FAV Gaming aren't top for nothing and this was also very clear with the way they have been playing especially with Bonchan who is currently undefeated in regular play in the league. He (Bonchan) went up first and destroyed Nemo finishing the final match with a double perfect, the ultimate ignomy in fighting games.
The second match was far from a wash as Higuchi played fantastically well and against anyone else would probably have taken the win, but facing Ryusei was another matter. Higuchi played most of the game burnt out and didn't seem to care as long as it gave him a chance to set the tone against JP. This would have intimidated anyone, but Ryusei stood his ground and took advantage of the periods that Hiiguchi was burnt out. The set went back and forth and even went down to the final round, but Ryusei was the winner.
This put FAV on course for a 40-0 game if Tokido could defeat Shuto. But, as mentioned earlier, Shuto has been phenomenal, and so it was again as he defeated Tokido 3-0 to level the scores.
This meant a tiebreaker was in order and the two in form players, Shuto and Bonchan, squared up. Bonchan was too much for Shuto and took the first-to-one game gaining his team 5 points.
