Albert Francis "Al" Simmons, a Lieutenant in the US Marine Corps turn Secret Service agent and eventually working for the CIA. Later in life, he became part of a US Security Group lead by Jason Wynn.
He would eventually want to retire, a decision that would cost him his life as his former work partner Bruce "Chapel" Stinson was tasked with his assassination.
Due to his life as an assassin, Simmons' soul went to Hell where he struck a deal with the demon lord Malebolgia to lead Malebolgia's army of Hell in exchange for seeing his wife Wanda Blake again. A Simmons, lacking his memories and in a disfigured body, he discovered that Wanda had remarried a close friend of his, Terrance Fitzgerald. Conceiving a daughter, Cyan Fitzgerald.
Spawn, as Simmons would call himself, fought the forces of Heaven and Hell. Eventually, he would battle Satan and God himself.
