Philip de Leon, Cervantes' father, was a Spanish king's envoy and a privateer. He was tasked with plundering for Spain. He approached an English ship intending to rob it on one occasion, only to discover it was a warship. Having been caught off guard, he perished along with his ship. The Devastation caused by his death caused his son Cervantes to become one of the most notorious pirates on the coasts of Europe.
To avoid this fate of other sailors who had sworn their allegiance to Spain, he decided to turn to piracy. The "Merchant of Death," Vercci, sent him a message one day asking for his assistance in tracking down Soul Edge. Vercci was the merchant who had given Cervantes his ship's artillery, so he initially turned it down but eventually accepted. Cervantes discovered a "strange article" on a ship in one year of investigation. Despite the lack of evidence, Cervantes was a pirate and could find a use for the ship's possessions even if Soul Edge was not present. Cervantes plundered the ship, and nobody heard from him again for more than twenty years.
Cervantes retrieved Soul Edge from the abyss of time and used it to unleash havoc on those around him. Then, for twenty years, the sword lay inactive. It wanted to be as strong as it had once been, but a ninja and a warrior thwarted its plans. When Cervantes was conquered, he was consumed by the fires of hell, and his body turned to ash.
Cervantes was able to rise from the dead. However, he needed souls to keep his body alive and increase his strength due to his previous death experience. After killing several mighty warriors and regaining his memories, he set his sights on his next goal: reviving Soul Edge, only this time so that it obeyed him rather than the other way around. He knew that gathering the sword's fragments was how he could accomplish this. Someday, he would hunt down his daughter whose life he had once spared and consume her soul for himself. It was only then that he would savour the fullness of her soul's potential.
His resurrection had erased all traces of his past, but Cervantes began remembering them as soon as he attacked an ex-coworker, igniting his bloodlust and desire for revenge. He regained his memories by killing people and taking their souls, so he went on a killing spree that included taking his daughter's soul. After becoming enamoured with the idea of reclaiming Soul Edge, Cervantes decided to wait for his strength to rise to the level where he could control it once more and regain control of it.
When Cervantes first held Soul Edge, the power of the cursed sword transformed him into a monstrosity. Even now, the bloody memories of the sword flash through his mind, and he can use them to help him control the enormous amounts of energy he has inside of him. His vicious attacks with his two blades leave little room for his opponent to counter, and if they are thrown off balance, he strikes like a viper with supernatural strength to finish them off. This ruthless fighting style was honed during his time under the control of the cursed sword, during which he pillaged and slaughtered without regard for the consequences.
For effective use of this fighting style, a heavy longsword is combined with a dagger/gun combination, and superhuman strength and skill are required to wield it successfully. A powerful strike can turn the tide of battle in a single blow when executed correctly. At the same time, combinations that utilize both weapons leave no openings for an opponent to capitalize on. The gun can be used to hit a challenger from a distance, blindingly fast leaps can close the gap and impale them, and inhumanely high jumps can be used to come at them from above.
Cervantes's look is similar to that of his original Soul Calibur body but with purple skin and glowing orange markings, as well as bushier facial hair, suggesting Malfestation. His wear returns to a more old-style look but now features a red and black colour scheme and a Jolly Roger insignia on his belt and boots. On the other hand, his bonus costume gives him a suit of armour. Nonetheless, his physical body appears to emit a fiery glow and aura, with his face appearing to be internally consumed by fire, resembling Soul Edge to an extent.
