The legend had a lot to say about tournament formats and throw loops
Daigo Umehara, one of the most recognizable faces in the fighting game community, has mentioned that he thinks normal throws in Street Fighter 6 could be buffed to make them stronger.
He said this on one of his streams to which he released a snippet on his YouTube channel.
Daigo while answering questions from his chat, said that he thinks throws should be strong, but that throw loops should be curtailed.
The issue of throw loops has been a thing of controversy in Street Fighter 6 with many competitors and fans complaining about the mechanic which can see you eat 5 throws in an endless loop. The issue was even more elevated during the last Street Fighter League World Championship as Kawano for Good 8 Squad ended the tournament with four straight throws in the corner against Punk to secure a victory. For some, this was an anti-climactic end to such a hype tournament.
Daigo also shared some thoughts on tournament formats, stating that he thinks they should change. He didn't elaborate, but it was something he spoke about in a recent video with Tokido where he said that the current tournament rules could and should be changed. He said that the fact that the rules have not been changed was only proof that the people in charge aren't thinking about the rules much and that if they had thought about it more, there would have been changes.
For Daigo, he believes that there should be variety in the format of tournaments and that this can only help the scene. He explained that he doesn't believe in the idea that rules cannot be changed and improved and that only a rule written by a god can be considered infallible.
Daigo has continued to compete in high-level tournaments, even confirming that he will be in Canada in July for the Get On My Level competition.
