A renowned competitive fighting game player Tweedy recently shared a video with his thoughts on current competitive state of the recently released Mortal Kombat 1. The major point of the video, among other things, is Player 1 advantage issue which caused huge uproar in Mortal Kombat community over the last days. The video has been released before the official statement by NetherRealm Studios regarding this issue, which is now promised to be addressed in the next patch, which is believed to be released this Friday, September 29.
Tweedy mentions lack of some basic features, such as wifi filter, connection filter, practice mode while searching for matches, lobbies, and crossplay, which are necessary for a competitive fighting title. In Tweedy's opinion, character lock system in Kombat League (MK's ranked system) is also undercooked compared to games like Street Fighter 6, where you have character specific rankings. Tweedy, as a top level competitive player, is also concerned regarding official tournament circuits. While other major competitive fighting games like Street Fighter 6, Tekken 7, Guilty Gear -STRIVE-, Dragon Ball FIGHTERZ, and The King of Fighters XV all have official tournament circuits in one form or another, MK Pro Kompetition has been abandoned back in 2020 during COVID-19 pandemic and we heard nothing of it ever since.
Be sure to check the full video by Tweedy above. As for Mortal Kombat 1, it's difficult to draw any conclusions just yet since the game has been released only for a couple of weeks. However its initial state is provoking reasonable concern regarding game's future and longlivity, especially in comparison with other franchises.
