The reigning SFL champion departs the team he led to glory, heading to an organisation he has helped shape from the inside
Tokido won it all last season, leading REJECT to victory in Street Fighter League Japan and the SFL World Championship. He has now made the move to VARREL to continue his quest to be the greatest.
The news came as a shock when an official REJECT video on YouTube disclosed that Tokido, Akira, LeShar, Big Bird, and AngryBird were all leaving the team. LeShar's departure had been expected, as he had already indicated that he would not be joining REJECT on loan again for the upcoming SFL season. The other players, however, were thought to be long-term prospects for the team. None more so than Tokido, who as captain and the face of the organisation, was assumed by many to be a permanent fixture.
But the project has run its course. Tokido was announced as part of a rebrand for VARREL, who also had a genuinely striking piece of news to accompany it: the signing of three-time Olympic gold medallist figure skater Shoma Uno as a team member. In an interview, Shoma made clear that he will not be on the frontlines competitively, but that he wants to take gaming seriously. He will likely not be part of the SFL roster VARREL fields, but his presence signals the kind of mainstream crossover ambition the organisation is clearly pursuing.
The move makes considerable sense when one considers the wider picture. Cellorb, the company that owns VARREL, has Tokido as a director. For a former Evo winner who continues to compete at the highest level and shows no signs of slowing down, aligning himself more closely with an organisation he has a stake in is a logical next step. It also adds a layer of symbolism to his departure from REJECT. He was not simply leaving a team. He was stepping toward something he has helped build.
What This Means For SFL
The moves will have a significant impact on Street Fighter League's upcoming season. For VARREL, last season's roster featured Mago, Mizuha, YHC-Mochi, and TS. With Tokido now joining, it is likely that one of those players will have to make way, either through a transfer or by stepping back from SFL competition entirely.
For REJECT, the situation is more complicated, and the emotional weight of the departures should not be understated. Tokido was not just a competitor for this team. He was its identity. Losing him, LeShar, and three other players in a single announcement means the organisation has lost half its fighting strength, and the roles those players filled were not peripheral ones. To rebuild, REJECT could look to the transfer market, or lean on their strong youth division, which has players like Hinao, Eguto, and Tako waiting in the wings.
What Happens Next?
For Big Bird and AngryBird, the next chapter is one they have written themselves. The two players have moved to Red Dunes Esports, an Emirati organisation they founded together. It is a remarkable step and one that speaks to the ambition of two players who clearly see a future beyond simply competing for someone else's banner.
LeShar, meanwhile, has returned to DRX, with whom he may compete in SFL Asia next season. Daigo and Fuudo remain with REJECT, giving the team some experienced foundation to build from as they navigate what will be a significant period of transition.
For VARREL, the pieces are falling into place. With Tokido at the helm and a roster that already has proven SFL talent, they will be among the teams to watch when the new season gets underway.
