Smash Commentator Ranks Evo Games By Fun Factor, Places SF6 On Top
Coney has a couple of hot takes but this one might have upset a few people

Evo 2023 was a delight to watch, and we got to watch several iconic matches in some iconic games, but how would you rank your viewing experience if you had to choose which games were most fun to watch and the ones that weren't?

That is what Smash commentator and former pro player, Coney, tried to do as he took to X (formerly Twitter) to rank his favorite games to watch at Evo. According to him, he was ranking them on the basis of how much their Top 6 was to watch. He ranked Street Fighter 6 at the top calling it a 'Peak' viewing experience. After this was Tekken 7, Guilty Gear -STRIVE-, DBFZ, Mortal Kombat 11, KOF XV, UMVC3, and, finally Melty Blood: Type Lumina, which he said he didn't watch, bar one game that he wishes he hadn't seen.

This is what people in the community would call a 'hot take,' and with all hot takes, it split the community. Most people (especially Melty and KOF fans) were understandably upset that he ragged on their game, but others felt he made a good point.

You see, a lot of games at Evo 2023 were played according to the meta, so we saw a lot of mirror matches in Grand Finals which people did not always appreciate. Mortal Kombat 11 featured a mirror match with Fujin, Tekken 7 saw a Kunimitsu vs Kunimitsu final, and we saw similar in DBFZ and Melty Blood. This wasn't appreciated by everyone who wanted some character variety.

This was in contrast to Street Fighter 6, where Top 6 featured 2 Kens, 1 Blanka/Luke, 1 Cammy, 1 JP, and 1 Chun li, meaning that people got to see different characters strut their stuff.

Last we saw, Coney is still alive and well.

Regardless of feeling over individual games, it is safe to say that everyone found Evo to be an exciting watch, and this bore out in the numbers with over 400,000 people watching across different streams. We have a whole breakdown of the numbers here.

Evo was fun, but now it is time to look forward to Gamers8 Street Fighter 6 invitational taking place in Saudi Arabia.
