Esports World Cup Opens New Qualification Routes for 2027
Great news for players who normally will be unable to travel to various places for tournaments

The annual Esports World Cup has opened up new ways for players to qualify for the 2027 edition.

They laid out the new routes on their official website. The two qualification systems are Direct Qualifiers and Satellite Last Chance Qualifiers (LCQs).

The former is quite straightforward. Regional tournaments can apply to become part of the ‘Road to EWC’ and can then become direct qualifiers. Such tournaments can run with their own funding and identity, with the only requirement being that they run according to EWC and publisher standards.

For instance, if Combo Breaker were to apply and receive accreditation as a direct qualifier, it would become a qualifying event without needing to change how it runs the tournament or how it puts everything together. It would simply need to ensure that the tournament runs according to publisher and EWC standards.

The Satellite LCQs are the more interesting option. This is a grassroots initiative that enables small tournaments to become part of the EWC ecosystem. Such a tournament can simply apply to become a Satellite LCQ. If approved, its winners will become eligible for the LCQs for the main EWC tournament.

This is great news for players who are unable to travel, as winners of these events will receive accommodation and visa support from the EWC.

Registrations are open now and will remain available until December 20, 2026, with all events and LCQs required to be completed by June 1, 2027.

These new pathways are only available for a limited number of games, with Street Fighter 6 and Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves included. Unfortunately, the system will not be available for Tekken 8, though this might change in the future.
