Masahiro Sakurai Shows Off the Smash Bros. Prototype
Source: Nintendo
The game originally had no Nintendo heroes.

Japanese game designer Masahiro Sakurai continues to talk about creating projects on his YouTube channel, which has almost crossed the mark of half a million subscribers. In the latest video, he spoke of the stage of prototyping Dragon King: The Fighting Game, which later became the first version of Smash Bros.

The game initially did not feature Nintendo characters; however, it already included many recognizable mechanics and interface elements.

Even then, Sakurai tried to avoid overcomplicated combo mechanics, which, according to the game designer, could alienate the mass audience. The gameplay was focused on intuitive control, agility, and improvisation.

We think you'll have a great time this weekend watching this archival footage that will help you better understand the idea of Smash Bros. and see the series' evolution.
