Controversy Around Mortal Kombat 1's Pricey Halloween Fatality
Fans boycott the bug-devouring, pumpkin-smashing animation despite suiting the holiday.

The newest Mortal Kombat is facing backlash after charging $10 worth of premium currency for a single Halloween fatality. Fans are upset that on top of the $70 base game, developers are nickel-and-diming them for content many feel should be included already.

The controversial fatality has the fighter grabbing a jack-o-lantern off the ground and violently smashing it onto the opponent's head. Swarms of large bugs and centipedes come crawling out, engulfing the struggling opponent. The fighter then kicks their head off, sending the pumpkin and skull flying onto a front porch, where it splits open to reveal the lifeless, decapitated head. Despite the gruesomely appropriate animation for Halloween, fans are boycotting it due to the steep $10 price tag.

Many argue that Mortal Kombat 1 shouldn't have such aggressive microtransactions for a full-priced game. Players think the fatality should have cost seasonal currency instead of premium currency that typically requires real money.

This issue piles on top of existing resentment about the abundance of microtransactions and upcoming paid DLC characters. Though reviews are positive, technical problems and greedy monetization are tainting the game's reputation among loyalists.

Unless the developers rethink their monetary strategy, the outrage over this overpriced holiday animation may continue plaguing Mortal Kombat 1. For fans, it epitomizes the unwelcome microtransaction model invading premium games lately.
