Alex’s Backstory in SF6 Divides Western and Japanese Audiences
Cultural differences play a role here

Alex, the latest character to join Street Fighter 6, has officially been released.

Alongside his arrival came a balance patch that introduced changes across the entire roster. While some players have welcomed the update, others have criticized it for not going far enough.

However, beyond gameplay, it is Alex’s story that has generated the most discussion.

Alex's Backstory

Alex is revealed to be in a romantic relationship with Patricia, the daughter of his trainer, Tom.

Patricia has been known to Alex since she was a baby and he was taken in by Tom after being separated from his parents. Tom is something of a father figure to Alex and this made people consider Patricia as a sort of younger sister. Therefore, the reveal that they are romantically involved and even expecting a child rubbed some the wrong way.

This was further enhanced by the reveal that Tom is actually a cousin to Alex’s biological mother which makes Alex and Patricia second cousins. There was also some worry about the age difference between the two, but this is tenuous as Alex’s age is unknown, but is believed to be young while Patricia, who was 15 years old in Street Fighter III: Third Strike, is certainly above the age of majority by the time of the events in Street Fighter 6

Split Reaction Across Regions

While the controversy itself is interesting, what has been more fascinating is the difference in how the story has been received between the western audience and the Asian market. For the west, there has been a lot of disappointment and even derision for Alex with some planning to boycott the character entirely. Meanwhile, the Japanese audience seems largely fine with it and have no moral squabbles with the situation.

The differing responses highlight how cultural perspectives can shape the reception of storytelling choices in games.

While opinions remain divided, the discussion around Alex shows that even in a competitive title like Street Fighter 6narrative decisions can have a significant impact on how characters are perceived.
