The much anticipated ft10 exhibition match between Evo Japan champion, MenaRD, and FGC legend, Daigo Umehara, is only 6 days away. Ahead of this pivotal date, Daigo has released a powerful promotional video that has moved the FGC to its core.
The match, which has been almost a year in the making, will be pitting two of the greatest players Street Fighter has ever seen. Daigo, representing an older generation of the game, faces MenaRD, one of the most decorated players of his era and a dominant force in the current Street Fighter landscape. This is more than an exhibition. It is a generational collision.
The Promotional Video Tells Us a Lot
The video, which was posted on Daigo's YouTube channel, featured many in Daigo's professional circle along with fans who have known him for a while, talking about his impact on the FGC, their lives, and their hopes for the fight. Pro players like Tokido, Fuudo, Bonchan, and Mago amongst others spoke to the fact that Daigo is the reason the term 'professional player' could become a thing in Japan as he was the pioneer in that area.
The general sentiment was that Daigo is a legend that cannot be topped and that regardless of the result, his legacy would not be forgotten.
In relation to the match itself, the respondents were split. Many stated that the odds are certainly stacked against Daigo and that with Mena's prowess in the game, he will most likely be the victor. But some, like Tokido — who has actually played a ft10 against Daigo — believe that in the right environment, Daigo can definitely emerge as the winner. Daigo's long set results are impeccable. He has recorded wins over Evo 2013 winner, Xian, Evo 2016 winner, Infiltration, Evo 2017 winner, Tokido, and Capcom Cup 2018 winner, Gachikun. In almost all of those sets, Daigo was considered the underdog but with intense preparation and training, he was able to be victorious.
Daigo is working hard for this battle as evidenced by the fact that he missed his team, REJECT's, fan meeting to celebrate their recent Street Fighter League World Championship, just to prepare for this match. Daigo is also conspicuously missing from the attendees for Evo Japan, meaning he will not be participating in that tournament, most likely also because of this match, so a lot of sacrifice has gone into his preparation. It must be noted that Daigo has already qualified for Capcom Cup 13 thanks to REJECT's SFL win, which makes him missing Evo Japan, a Capcom Cup 13 qualifier, a bit easier to understand.
