Sleep Fighter is a Capcom-backed, unique tournament held in Japan that debuted in 2024. The event was organized by SSP, a Japanese pharmaceutical company that manufactures a sleep improvement medicine called Drewell.
After a successful first tournament last year, which garnered almost 100,000 views on YouTube, the event is returning for its second edition.
This year’s tournament will take place on July 5th, 2025, and will follow most of the same rules as last year’s edition.
There are a few changes this time around—most notably, a larger roster of players is allowed to participate. Last year’s event featured four teams with three players each; however, this year’s edition will include four teams with five players each. As with last year’s unique rules, this year’s Sleep Fighter Tournament will also require each player to sleep a minimum of six hours every night or suffer some penalties.
The event is designed to raise awareness about the dangers of sleep deficiency and to promote healthier sleep habits among Japanese professionals.
This message is particularly relevant within the esports ecosystem, where players often sacrifice sleep in order to practice longer for tournaments and competitions.
