Become a PatronAfter several tries, Chris Wong has finally booked his place in Capcom Cup thanks to a Grand Final victory over two-time Capcom Cup winner, MenaRD. The Grand Final was a tense affair as MenaRD had reset the bracket by a commanding 3-0 defeat of Chris Wong, but in the second set, Chris was able to calm his nerves and got a 3-1 win over MenaRD. The final seconds of the Grand Final were heart-stopping as Chris and Mena were both down on life with the timer down to the last five seconds. Mena actually stood still for about three of those seconds waiting to crack Chris and attack at the last possible moment. He did a Blanka ball, Chris jumped over it, and the time was up.
For Chris Wong, this was redemption as he lost out in the CPT Asia East tournament in Grand Finals to NL. Then he once again made Grand Finals in Singapore, only to lose to Gachikun. He is currently number one in the World Warrior standings, but there is no guarantee he will win the regional final, making this a very important opportunity to win. It is a testament to his consistency to have placed so highly at all these events.
For Mena, it is also a difficult situation as he has now run out of offline events with which he can use to qualify for Capcom Cup X. Seeing as he won the last one, the fact that there is a possibility that there will be a Capcom Cup without MenaRD is pretty wild. He has so far come second at Evo, 4th at the Singapore event, and runner up here again.
The top 8 action was sick and interestingly had a lot of Hong Kong representation with Chris Wong, Human Bomb, and Oil King all coming from the country while HotDog29 was also in top 8 from Taiwan. The first couple of games ended 3-0 and perhaps the most exciting romp in the first round of games was between HotDog and Oil King which ended 3-2.
Mena lost to Valmaster who was the only European in top 8 and ended the tournament in third position. He was fantastic and is arguably the best Chun li out there right now. Valmaster would lose to Chris Wong eventually, but it was a close one.
When collecting his award, Chris said that he had Moke, the leading Japanese Chun li player, to thank for his ability to handle Valmaster.
With all the offline events over now, players will have to fight through their region's CPT online event, or World Warrior regional final to have a possibility of thhe $1,000,000 prize on offer.
