And the "best case" is that it's just AI making things up.
Recent Twitter thread from the esteemed user PixelButts illuminated a little known vulnerability of Riot Games. As it turns out, the game developer's GitHub repositories, which were meant to be private, were getting publicly updated with most recent confidential information.
There is a deliberate lack of information on the poster's part, but it seemingly confirms that Riot utilizes AI in game development to some extent. Though it's seemingly limited to automation and some form of summary or recaps, as the next piece of news stems directly from that.
The context here is that "lion" has been a codename for 2XKO, so one of the commits in the repository directly calls 2XKO a dead game. However, there is a big "but" here in the form of AI.
Perhaps the best case scenario is that commits have some AI generated comments to make it more clear what various things in the repo represent, and this particular comment is some completely inaccurate statement.
A not necessarily "worst" but potentially real scenario is that this comment, if AI generated, is only a gist of something that was expressed internally at some point. In that case, it would be up to validity of the source and the context behind it.
That's a lot of words to say that this might potentially not mean much, but it's not looking good. Riot has been generally good at communication, so they might acknowledge these leaks and reassure people that the game is still going strong.
After all, the competitive scene for the game has been healthy, it's getting some hype characters at a steady pace, and it's seemingly getting more polished in terms of balance.
That said, reassuring people can backfire in the longterm if Riot does have plans to either shut the game down, or severely scale down the development, like they did with their CCG, Legends of Runeterra, after it underperformed.
For now, if you enjoy the game, the best thing you can do is to just continue supporting it.
