Ever since cinematic supers became popular, it feels like almost every new fighting game tries to find new ways to appear bombastic and spectacular. Not necessarily for the sake of players, but spectators.
Naturally, the response to these innovations has been mixed. Fighting games are a very active genre. Even though rounds are quick, you're always hands on, always thinking about the next moves, which makes interruptions to the flow so much more noticeable.
This is especially egregious in a game like Tekken, which used to thrive on quick interactions and until Tekken 7, had little in the way of over the top mechanics that you could find in 2D fighters.
Tekken 8 changed that completely, with players starting every round with a full bar of Heat meter, which means that both of them can now briefly stop the game to activate it.
Tekken modder and player OVERFLOW made this the target of their latest project.
