The new Mortal Kombat 1 patch has gone live with several changes, considering it is most likely the very last update the game will ever receive.
The new patch makes changes to characters, with many getting buffs, especially Raiden and Shang Tsung, making them stronger overall.
The reception has been somewhat mixed, with some praising it as something to get players a little excited again. However, a lot of the player base were disappointed that it was a relatively small patch for a game that will never be getting another update.
NetherRealm announced that Mortal Kombat 1 would no longer receive updates back in May, with attention already turned towards the next game. This was quite disappointing to many as the game had barely been up for two years before this announcement was made.
MK1 was always controversial as it made many bold choices that weren’t always accepted by the fanbase. For one, they introduced the Kameo system, which was essentially an assist feature where players could get ‘Kameo’ characters to help out in battle. While innovative, they drew the ire of fans when it was revealed that many of the kameo characters were just that, and they could not be playable in the regular game.
The choice to also reboot the storyline once more was also something that did not sit well with everyone.
The fate of the Mortal Kombat series is unknown, especially in the light of the looming sale of parent company Warner Bros to streaming giants, Netflix. It seems Netflix will not be taking over the gaming division, so this makes it unclear what will happen with the next NRS title. While there are whispers it could be a new Injustice game, it could also be a new Mortal Kombat title, especially with the second live-action movie poised to come out in the near future.
