Injustice fans might have to wait a little longer?
Mortal Kombat II is just on the cusp of releasing in movie theaters, and to help promote the new movie Ed Boon has been making some time for interviews with a few outlets.
Typically you don't get much out of these, as both actors, developers, and even directors are usually limited in what they can or cannot say. However, if you've seen prior Ed Boon interviews, you'll notice that he can be relatively frank and eager to entertain the question, especially when it comes to the franchise that he's clearly passionate about nearly 4 decades later.
You can check out his full interview with Collider below, but we'll highlight some specific answers.
The first question he gets asked is very simple, is there a character he is really trying to include in the next Mortal Kombat? The series itself is certainly not lacking in original characters, but they've also included so many guests of the years, and that's where Boon goes initially.
They pretty much managed to include all the classic movie icons that developers grew up with, but Boon still hopes to feature a Street Fighter character one of these days. He's also still interested in bringing characters from DC and Marvel.
Perhaps the question that attracted most attention is about the next project for NRS. It has been 3 years since MK1 now, so it's just about time. While Boon points out that he can't outright tease something, it's very interesting to hear that they are pursuing another Mortal Kombat game.
The wording here does invite some interpretation. Are they pursuing it because they are busy on something else now? Maybe it's meant to be a more direct "well we're the MK guys, of course we're going a new MK, but no details yet."
Warner Bros. not too long ago was pointing out how much they plan to lean on their well established franchises after a string of flops, and DC is one of the things they pointed out, so it could be that NRS are actually working towards a new Injustice but still pursue a continuation of their own franchise.
