The release of an Omni-Man announcer voice as paid DLC for Mortal Kombat 1 has upset some fighting game players.
The announcer is currently available as part of the $40 Kombat Pack. But Kombat Pack owners still have to pay an additional $10 worth of in-game currency to unlock the Omni-Man announcer.
The Mortal Kombat Kommunity on Reddit echoed the pricing as "absurd," voicing that the announcer "should already be free" with the Kombat Pack. Other players also expressed frustration about the total cost of the base game, Kombat Pack, and additional DLC-like costumes.
This Omni-Man announcer DLC follows previous controversies surrounding MK1's monetization, including fatalities and other add-on content priced individually. However, with nearly 3 million copies sold, the financial success may limit the impact of the criticism.
The situation highlights ongoing tensions in the MK kommunity around the monetization model and value perception of incremental DLC releases. But NetherRealm has not yet responded to the latest criticism of the Omni-Man announcer pack.
