One year ago, MenaRD put out a challenge to fighting game legend Daigo Umehara. In what is now an infamous tweet, he stated that he wanted to face Daigo in a first-to-10 set.
For a long time, Daigo has been known as a master of long sets, especially when given time to prepare. In extended formats like this, he remains unbeaten, with victories over players such as Tokido, Infiltration, and Xian.
Daigo accepted MenaRD’s challenge at the time, though no date was set for the clash.
Now, a date has finally been confirmed for what is shaping up to be one of the most exciting Street Fighter 6 sets in the game’s history.
MenaRD is a two-time Capcom Cup champion and is widely regarded as one of the best Street Fighter players in the world. On the other side, Daigo is a true icon of the scene, with a legacy that has helped shape the fighting game community into what it is today.
MenaRD has had the upper hand in shorter sets, including their most recent meeting at the just concluded Capcom Cup, where they represented REJECT and Bandits respectively. However, a fully prepared Daigo in a long set presents a completely different challenge.
The match will take place on April 29, 2026, and will be hosted by Evo Legends.
Following the announcement, REJECT, Daigo’s team, also revealed a partnership with RTS, the company behind Evo, aimed at creating engaging fighting game content and events. While this first-to-10 set does not appear to be directly tied to that agreement, the overlap is notable given that Daigo is signed to REJECT and the event will be broadcast by Evo.
There is understandable excitement surrounding the match. Based purely on recent form, MenaRD may be seen as the favorite. However, Daigo has proven time and again that his legendary status is well earned, especially in long-format battles.
This is one clash that could go either way.
