The South African champion will now make his dream come true in next year's Capcom Cup
Jabhi Mabuza, aka, JabhiM, is now the first African to make it to Capcom Cup. He won his spot via an amazing win over Billy Date in the grand final to mark a historic moment. Billy Date was the winner of the last tournament held last year, but due to the sad cancellation of the Capcom Cup earlier this year, he was unable to participate in the event.
JabhiM overcame his disappointment from last year when Billy took the top spot and once more came from losers to take a massive W. JabhiM and Billy are widely considered as the best players in their region, and the games between them are usually close. At the last CPT, Billy took the win, but at the CPT finals, JabhiM was the dominant winner. So, at this tournament, Billy had a point to prove, while Jabhi wanted vengeance for his last CPT loss. Billy won the winners' final 3-0, giving Jabhi a mountain to climb in grand finals.
JabhiM relished the challenge and, upon meeting Billy again, defeated him 3-1 to reset the bracket and 3-0 to take the win.
Top 8 South Africa
The rest of the top 8 was a great display of the best South Africa has to offer. The winners side of top 8 featured 3-0s across the board until the grand finals. The Losers' bracket was where all the fun took place with both Vinipetrolium, who is a cousin to Billy Date, and Erefaanpearce taking very tight games against Ren and Apollo respectively. Erefaanpearce really caught the eye with his Vega play. It was also noteworthy that at 45 years of age, Erefaanpearce wasn't fazed by the competition and was great to see.
After the win, there was an emotional interview with JabhiM where he expressed his happiness at having a spot at Capcom Cup. He also announced that he would not be taking part in any more World Warrior events in his region so as to give other players in the region a chance at a spot at Capcom Cup. When asked about whom he'd most love to play against, he mentioned Kawano. He also said that if Punk were to qualify, then that is the person he would most definitely want to face the most.
He also celebrated his win on Twitter, stating that he could not believe he was able to make Capcom Cup. There was also a post by his sponsor, Goliath Gaming showing his excitement at his moment of victory.
JabhiM is the twelfth person to make it to the finals and hopefully the first of two South Africans to climb the grand stage that is Capcom Cup IX.
