Fenrich Reveals the Story Behind the 'Fenritti' Name
It's a simple translation issue

Japanese fighting game professional Fenrich, sometimes called Fenritti, has explained the reasoning behind his gamertag. This follows a video from FGC commentator and tournament organizer Jiyuna, in which he explained why some people spell Fenrich's tag as "Fenritti."

In the video, Jiyuna explained that when Fenrich wrote out his name using the romanized Japanese spelling, he was using an older system called Kunrei-shiki, which writes "chi" as "ti." The more widely used Hepburn system, however, spells it as "chi."

As a result, at a Dragon Ball FighterZ tournament in Las Vegas, a translator who was unfamiliar with the players read his tag as "Fenritti" based on the romanization of his name.

The pronunciation stuck, and many tournaments have continued to refer to him as Fenritti.

Fenrich later provided some additional context, explaining that he borrowed the name from a character in Makai Senki Disgaea 4, a tactical RPG he was playing at the time. According to Fenrich, he never expected to travel overseas and become the international competitor he is today, so he never gave much thought to how his name would be read outside Japan.

Fenrich is currently competing in Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves at the Esports World Cup.
