The Esports Awards has visited the FGC again this year and the Evo winner is the player of note
AngryBird, winner of Evo 2023 and finalist at the Gamers8 Street Fighter 6 invitational, has been nominated for thie year's Esports Awards category, Esports Controller Player of the Year.
This comes off the back of a stellar 2023 for the player who has always been top class, but has never hit the heady heights of some of the FGC's biggest tournaments. But, with the release of Street Fighter 6, AngryBird was hard of work, and won the biggest tournament in FGC history so far with this year's Evo which saw over 7000 participants begin the journey to the top.
AngryBird was nominated along with other players including four-time Evo-winner for Tekken, Arslan Ash, Call of Duty pro, Hydra, amongst others.
The Esports Awards was started in 2016 and has consistently awarded the top players in the space. The category AngryBird was nominated for consists of players who "primarily competes using a controller or similar device (e.g. fight stick, racing wheel etc), over the previous 12 months at the highest level. The award is judged on the merit of both honours won throughout the year and the skill cap of the individual."
Last year, iDom was nominated, but ultimately lost out to Matthew “Formal” Piper. Since the FGC is a smaller subset of the entire esports scene, it isn't common for members of the FGC to win at these awards and so far none has won the Esports Controller Player of the Year since it was introduced in 2021.
The winner of the this particular category is chosen by both panelists and fans with the former with 75% of the votes, and the latter, 25%.
AngryBird has already asked fans to vote for him here. Voting is open untile the 20th of November and can be done everyday.
