Evo Registeration Leaderboard Makes For Grim Reading For MK1
The game continues to struggle in competitive spaces

Evo 2024 will take place at the tail end of the third week of July and registrations are just about to close for those interested in competing in the FGC's most prestigious tournament.

Therefore, the leaderboard for registration has been released and it shows that Street Fighter 6 leads the way followed by Tekken 8 and Guilty Gear -STRIVE-. The exact numbers have not been released, but with over 5000 entrants for last year's Street Fighter 6 Evo, and this being the first Evo for Tekken 8, the numbers should be pretty high. However, further down the list is another game which came out last year and was expected to be one of the top 3 fighting games. Mortal Kombat 1 sits in 7th position out of 8, and while there are no exact numbers attached, this should be something of a disappointment to the fans.

Mortal Kombat 1 came out in September of 2023 with a lot of excitement for a soft reboot which again changed the MK timeline. Coupled with awesome graphics, a strong story campaign, and single player content, it would not have been surprising to see Mortal Kombat dominating the scene.

Unfortunately, it hasn't panned out that way as various issues ranging from poor online infrastructure to an uninspiring pro tour have plagued Mortal Kombat. The game has tried to keep fans engaged with DLC and while the community seems happy, tournament turnouts have been a much different story.
