The early months of Street Fighter 6 saw some insane numbers for the game on Twitch as fans poured in to watch matches and tournaments. This was in large part due to some events taking place in Japan. One of these was the Crazy Raccoon Cup which pitted teams of streamers from other games coached by fighting game professionals against one another.
This included V-tubers, adventure game fans and so on. The venture was a great success as viewers across all the different communities gathered to watch their favourite streamers try to learn fighting games. The tactic was so successful that holding other tournaments became a problem because the Japanese streamers who were initially amateurs had all become Master rank players who could not be defined as learners anymore.
Now Capcom is looking to replicate the formula in the West with the announcement of the New Challengers Tournament. The tournament for which they had an announcement stream, will feature three teams each headed by a fighting game pro coach and various streamers from Capcom titles.
The format will see three teams face one another with each match consisting of 10 points. Unlike tournaments like Street Fighter League and the likes, there is no counter picking as player A from team one is obligated to face player A from team two and so on. The captains will only face each other to ensure a level playing field.
