Tekken 8 Mod Videos Are Getting Hit with Copyright Strikes

The conflict between Japanese publishers and game mods goes on. Remember roughly a month ago when Bandai Namco were taking down some mod videos that showcased Tekken Tag 2 Jun outfit? Well, something similar is happening again, but this time on a wider scale.

Rather prominent Tekken modder, UMIN, posted on Twitter that a lot of their videos that showcase their work have been locked down or demonetized, prompting them to retreat to Discord and Patreon.

IamOP, who has been making tonnes of informative and in-depth Tekken videos, but also showcased some of the more interesting mods, got hit with the copyright strikes as well, putting his channel at risk.

There seems to be almost no consistency to these actions, since the scale of these takedowns is rather limited, but it's more than enough to cause frustration in the community.

Harada made it clear in the past that mods exist in a sort of "I pretend I do not see it" territory. The developers don't mind them, they are just there to make a fun game that people would enjoy, but from the publisher's perspective, it's almost nothing but potential damages to profit or reputation. The latter was outlined by Capcom in their video about cheating and piracy, while the former is something that Harada brought up when Elden Ring mods for Tekken 7 blew up. Capcom mentioned something similar, but the general idea is that people messaging support about how to find or install mods takes away their time, and consequently money, especially when people report game issues that end up being caused by mods.

In the community the stance is much simpler, mods are cool. So we gotta hope that is a mistake or a misunderstanding, rather than the course going forward.
