Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Tops Highest Selling Fighting Games List
The platformer is essentially king of fighting games

Fighting games are a pretty small niche in the grand scheme of things within the gaming market, however, they still make some pretty impressive sales. At the top of the sales chart for fighting games sits a controversial title— Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

According to an infographic posted on X by Culture Crave, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has 34.22 million units sold and it makes it far and away the highest selling game within the fighting game niche.

It is followed by Street Fighter II which over a whopping 30 years remains relevant and have sold over 15 million units. Super Smash appears a total of three times, with Mortal Kombat appearing twice with 11 selling 15 million copies while X sold 11 million copies. Street Fighter V was at the bottom of the table with 10 million sales.

The addition of Super Smash has raised the age-old discussion on whether it should be considered a fighting game. As always some are in favor of that classification while others disagree. What they all agree on though, is Nintendo's treatment of their competitive scene which they seem not to want to grow in any meaningful way.

While the newer games like Street Fighter 6, Tekken 8 and Mortal Kombat 1 are missing from the list, one can imagine that they will be there soon considering Street Fighter 6 being such a successful game and Tekken 8 resonating with fans all around the world.
