The main antagonist of the Skullgirls game is on the verge of release and we have our first look at her
Skullgirls has been around for much longer than many people would have initially expected when it came out in 2012 and has grown into a relatively large game with a huge following. One of the main selling points of Skullgirls is the colorful cast of characters and surprisingly deep lore.
The main antagonist of the series, Marie, has been around from the very beginning and is the final boss in everyone's arcade run, but she has never been playable— until now.
In a tweet on their account, Skullgirls announced that Marie will have some gameplay footage very soon which they released a little later.
Marie has a tragic backstory as she was maltreated by a group sponsored by the Medici family and she became the Skullgirl to take revenge on them and to be with her best friend, Patricia, who is now the anti-Skullgirl weapon, Ms. Peacock. Marie isn't consumed by the Skullheart and is the current Skullgirl though she seems to be at the midpoint of her transformation.
The release of Marie was announced last year and we got a trailer for her, but this is the first time we have seen any gameplay by her. According to Skullgirls, they will be releasing some gameplay videos around Marie on a daily basis for a little while.
From a lore standpoint, the addition of Marie hints at a continuation of the story and what happens when the Skullheart has been destroyed.
She is bedecked in a maid uniform and fights with a cool-looking hoover which she uses to hit the opponents. This follows Skullgirls' practice of equipping their characters with weird weapons.
Marie is the last Season 1 DLC character to come out for Skullgirls and it is heartwarming to see new content for the game even a decade after. We do not have a definite release date for Marie, but we know it will be in 2023.
The reaction has been positive, and it seems like she will be a hit.
