Project L Developers Explain How They Will Handle F2P In New Interview
Tom and Tony Cannon shed more light on their plans for Project L

Tom and Tony Cannon can be considered FGC royalty thanks in no small part to their contributions to competitive esports through Evo and also through their rollback netcode, which is essentially a staple for every game.

The two who nowadays are working on a small title called 'Project L' (I wonder if you have heard about it?), and they were at Evo Japan to talk about the game and themselves.

The duo talked about their origins and the things that drew them to create Evo, which is considered the biggest fighting game tournament in the world.

However, of even greater interest was their discussion around Project L and some of the things they will be implementing into the game. There has already been some exposition regarding the game, thanks to Gamerbee, but we have now learned even more details on some of what we can expect from Project L.

First, they were asked about their thoughts on the free-to-play model, which has been confirmed will be in Project L. The brothers spoke at length about their vision for F2P, but most importantly, stressed that they would not have players 'pay for power,' which essentially means that there will be no pay-to-win model which will give 'whales' a distinct advantage over other players. According to the Cannons, most of the monetary aspect of Project L will come from skins and other cosmetic additions to the game.

The other huge talking point was patches. Riot games, especially League of Legends, tend to apply patches very quickly (every two weeks), but this is not sustainable with a fighting game, and the Project L devs said that they will look to patch the game regularly but will also take their time to ensure that players have a chance to figure stuff out and only when it looks problematic would they make changes.

Finally, they talked about the characters they would like to add to the game, stating that they want characters that make sense from a fighting game perspective but who also fit in the context of the League of Legends lore.

There is still no date for the game's release, but I think we can say with some confidence that it is closer now, than it was three years ago.
