The next game in the series will appear in 2023
NetherRealm Studios has announced a new game in the Mortal Kombat series in an unexpected form. Mortal Kombat: Onslaught will be a spin-off in the RPG genre for mobile devices based on iOS and Android.
The project will focus on a cinematic story and collectible gameplay. The player will assemble a team of already-known heroes and participate in epic battles in real-time.
Ed Boon, Chief Creative Officer at NetherRealm Studios, commented on the announcement:
We are pushing the boundaries of Mortal Kombat to allow players to experience the franchise in new ways, while still staying true to its core visceral nature. With Mortal Kombat: Onslaught, we reimagined Mortal Kombat into a strategic team-based collection RPG with fast-paced, group melee combat that both new and existing fans can enjoy. Mortal Kombat: Onslaught is expected to release in 2023. So far, no gameplay footage has been shown, and no details have been announced regarding the appearance of specific heroes, other than Sub-Zero and Scorpion, presented on the only art of the game.
