Upper Side Matches
The opening match of the top 8 was nothing short of a delight to watch, with VideoGamezYo, one of the few international players able to make the trip, competing against the legendary SonicFox. The match went the distance, as SonicFox's Cyrax gameplay left VGY's Homelander with pixel-count health more than twice. In the end, the British veteran won the series 3-1. For their Part, Rewind and Faysal also closed out a 3-1 series with Rewind advancing to the winner finals.
In the following series, the winner-side finals, saw Rewind taking down VGY in a close 3-2 series as neither player wanted to come down to the lower bracket and face SonicFox, who was bound to return for the grand finals eventually.
Lower Side Matches
Han Rashid, even with a mid-set coaching assist from Faysal, was not able to overcome TheMightyUnjust, who also took in a few words from SonicFox. In the other opening match of lowers, Bandinoz saw himself take an early lead with his Rain and Janet pairing. ONi's representative then brought Faysal to the edge of a loss in a 3-2 series, which the Lebanese player won to meet a rebounding SonicFox who had just cleanly swept away TheMigthyUnjust.
In those loser finals, SonicFox continued to dominate the match-up of their Cyrax and Madam Bo against Faysal's T-1000 and Mavado. If not for some incredible comeback plays from Faysal, the series would have also been a clean sweep for SonicFox.
Grand Finals
Entering the grand finals, SonicFox came in strong from the lower side of the bracket to face Rewind, who was from the upper side. SonicFox would be the first to win the three games necessary to reset the bracket and force another best-of-five set. During this reset, Rewind opted to switch to Homemlander after losing the first set in an attempt to counter SonicFox's steeled Cyrax, a pick that would prove worthy while on an incredible comeback against him with the series tied 1-1.
But the inevitable came all the same. Just as sonicFox from the lower bracket was fated, so too was the grand finals reset, and so was the game five finals, as well as SonicFox breaking their ten-year curse of never winning Combo Breaker to close out Mortal Kombat 1.
