Capcom Shows How Kenny Omega Brought Alex to Life in Street Fighter 6
"I think I gave him the most devastating One-Winged Angel of my entire career."

It's not every day that you get arguably the best possible person to do mocap for your video game character.  Capcom pretty much struck gold with Kenny Omega and Alex in Street Fighter 6, and it seems like they know it too.

Their latest video shares the rare behind-the-scenes look at the motion capture session with Kenny Omega. It's not narrated, but it's interesting to see the process come to life and even compared to some of the final results.

While being a mocap actor is a fairly unique skillset, you can tell that as a wrestler, Kenny knows that a move has to look good for the audience, which directly translates into speed and posing that's great for motion capture.

And despite not capturing face acting, you still see him really get into the character, which Capcom artists seemingly carried over into the final animation. Which in itself is a good reminder that motion capture performances you see are pretty much never the final thing that you see in the game.

All the data gathered from motion capture is later adjusted to fit the model as much as possible. Later, animators add in all the little details and adjust things to make sure it looks natural and conveys the required emotion.

This is especially true for fighting games where every frame needs to be just right, but even if the initial motion capture is extremely different from the final result, it always serves as an absolutely invaluable reference.

As for Kenny's performance specifically, he later expanded on it during IGN Fan Fest. Turns out, recording the One-Winged Angel move required quite a few attempts, with Kenny Omega saying that even despite the safety mats, he did one of his most devastating One-Winged Angels for this recording session.
