Biography
Story
Hotaru Futaba is a young Japanese martial artist who first appeared in Garou: Mark of the Wolves. She comes from a family of fighters, but she is not driven by violence or ambition. Her main goal is personal: she is searching for her older brother, who disappeared after their mother died.
During her search, Hotaru met Gato, a serious and distant fighter who looked very much like the brother she remembered. Gato denied knowing anything about her, but Hotaru never fully accepted that answer. Her pet marten, Itokatsu, also seemed to recognize him, giving Hotaru another reason to keep chasing the truth.
In Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves, Hotaru still has not given up. She sets out once again to face the mysterious man and make her feelings clear. Hotaru is calm, cheerful, and gentle, but she is also stubborn enough to keep walking into danger for the family she lost. Sweet on the surface, steel underneath. Very dangerous combination.
Appearance
Hotaru is a petite Japanese girl with long blue hair and blue eyes. She wears a blue and white Chinese-style martial arts outfit with puffed sleeves, gold accents, loose white pants, and dark shoes. Her pet marten, Itokatsu, often sits on her shoulder, wearing a red scarf.
Her design matches her fighting style well: soft, graceful, and bright, but still clearly built for motion. She does not look intimidating in the usual South Town way, which is exactly how people end up eating a clean launcher.
Gameplay
Hotaru is an agile all-rounder with one of the most complete kits in Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves. She has a projectile, a DP, a divekick, a launcher, a reflector, strong combo starters, and a command grab that can lead to follow-ups with the right resources. This makes her one of the easiest characters to recommend for new players.
Her biggest strengths are flexibility and movement. Hotaru can zone, rush down, pressure, defend, play footsies, and switch between offense and defense without relying on one narrow gimmick. Her fast walk and run speeds help her control spacing, while her air options make her annoying to anti-air cleanly.
However, she is not completely free real estate. Hotaru can struggle to get strong reward from low starters without spending resources, and some of her offense depends on REV Accel. She is still very beginner-friendly, but better players will get more out of her by learning when to spend meter, when to reset pressure, and when to simply move away and let the opponent make the mistake.
