Almost 13 years ago Messhof released Nidhogg, a unique little game that had two fencers fight each other to advance forward and eventually get eaten by the titular Nidhogg.
Despite its bizarre premise, it offered surprisingly nuanced combat, comparable to something like Footsies or Divekick, games that put great emphasis on positioning and where landing just one attack has massive impact.
In other words, not quite a fighting game, but certainly has the spirit of one, and now it's more true than ever, as recent update expands it with rollback netcode, online lobbies, better matchmaking, and actual training mode.
