What DF Happened: Virtua Fighter Trailer, Evo Leak, SF6 Disappoints
What last week in fighting games?

Welcome to our first What DF Happened of the year, a series where we quickly recap all the notable things that happened in the FGC within the last week. Without further ado, let’s dive into it.

Virtua Fighter Sequel

It’s still hard to believe that a new Virtua Fighter is actually happening, but it’s getting easier now that we got a more comprehensive glimpse into the future. For the Consumer Electronics Show, SEGA brought a video that gives you an idea of what the new Virtua Fighter will be like.

Even though it’s not actual gameplay you’re looking at, this is a confirmation that VF is sticking to its roots. No meter, no fancy special moves, no supers, just classic grounded martial arts. However, it’s worth noting that they also chose to show off destructible environments, both here and the original trailer. The opening to this video could also imply that the Yakuza developers might bring their open world expertise to Virtua Fighter.

And speaking of Virtua Fighter, SEGA has responded to the popularity of the VF REVO by doubling both the player cap and the prize money at the upcoming Frosty Faustings tournament. Now we can expect to see 256 players battle it out for two thousand dollars.

Evo Leak

It seems like the lineup of games for the upcoming Evo 2025 has been leaked by Evo’s own YouTube thumbnail. Look away if you want to avoid spoilers, but there’s hardly anything to be surprised about here.

Almost all the games from the previous year got to keep their spot, even Mortal Kombat 1 is still hanging on by a thread. The only exception is that KoFXV will be replaced by Fatal Fury City of the Wolves, and this year’s retro title is going to be Marvel vs. Capcom 2.

This is the third time in a row that a retro title spot was given to Capcom games, but with the great performance of the recent Marvel vs. Capcom collection it was to be expected.

With that said, the Evo announcement stream that will be happening in just a few days is bound to have a lot more information about the event so you should still tune in to that if you’re interested.

Street Fighter 6 Woes

Street Fighter 6 content drought seems to reaching a boiling point. Over the past few months Capcom has been receiving more and more criticism with regard to their support of the game, or rather how they choose to support it. Majority of their updates focus almost exclusively on the player avatar cosmetics, while the core audience is waiting for over a year now to get a new outfit for the base characters.

It’s made even worse by the fact that the character releases have also been incredibly slow. Terry came out near the end of September, and by the time Mai joins the game, it will be almost a half-year gap between new characters.

However, someone is buying them, and many are guessing that these outfits are extremely popular with with the casual Japanese audience, where the game is still bigger than anywhere else.

The game is still much beloved, but as the negative sentiment continues to grow, Capcom  might have to do something sooner, rather than later.
