Unity Clarifies Stance on New Fees, Refuses to Turn Decision Back
The Verge
New details on an ongoing drama

Yesterday, Unity Technologies, the company behind one of the most popular game engines in the world, announced changes to its business model, which caused severe backlash in the community. After fierce outrage from game developers and fans, Unity decided to clarify its position about the new fees. While they may soften their stance, the decision is not currently reversed. In their X (ex-Twitter), the company clarifies that it will not use some of the outrageous loopholes that the community instantly came up with to its benefit.

While this statement may have calmed some people, it still doesn't answer fundamental concerns regarding the new model. Moreover, Reddit users found the company silently removed the GitHub repository to track the license changes and deleted the clause that allowed game developers to stick with the TOS version active by the time of product publishing.

It is impossible to predict the long-term consequences of this week's events. Some game developers might want to search for other options while wasting resources to adapt to a new game engine. Some may even delete their games from the stores. Some fighting games (for example, Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid, Punch Planet, and Fantasy Strike) are developed on Unity, and their fate is also unclear.

As of now, we can only wait for the consequences.
