One of the most distinct traits of the gaming industry, is the lighting fast pace at which it progressed. Rapid technological advancement allowed us to go from two paddles and a ball, to lifelike characters, expensive worlds, and movie-like cutscenes in less than 50 years.
Game design went hand-in-hand with this evolution. Just look at The Legend of Zelda, what started out as a fairly simple action RPG about clearing screen after screen of enemies, ended up being one of the most inventive and ground-breaking open world adventures.
However, the same evolution did not seem to affect fighting games, where even the most modern games can often be compared to titles that came out decades ago, and not always in a positive light...
