The quick grappler jumps over the lazy zoner.
Indie fighting game scene continues to bring fresh and fun takes on what the genre can be.
In this case, we're talking about Street Typer X, a new fighter that recently popped up on Steam, and the whole premise here is combining a fighting game with a typing game.
If your frame of reference for typing games is something like Typing of the Dead, or other typing games that essentially put you on rails, it's not quite like those.
There are still fighting game fundamentals powering the gameplay, but instead of pressing buttons and doing motions to execute moves, you will be typing them out. Forward, back, punch, kick, special moves, and then occasional specific words that you have to type faster than your opponent.
As such, you can't just type your way to victory, unless your typing skills are simply overwhelmingly good compared to your opponent. If that scenario sounds intimidating, the devs actually added something to even the playing the field. It's not quite Modern, but alternative input method allows players to use shorthand for faster typing.
The only caveat here is that if you want to play this, you'll have to play this with someone. There is matchmaking and ability to play with a friend, but offline functionality is limited to practice mode.
If all that sounds interesting, the game is slated to release on February 5th, and the developer expects it to be in early access for roughly 6 months.
