The Street Fighter movie, starring Callina Liang, Noah Centineo, and Andrew Koji, came out last week and, according to reports, has managed to make $51.1 million worldwide in its first week.
This puts it ahead of other movies, including the highly acclaimed You Can See Everything, featuring Elizabeth Holmes and Nathan Fielder, which takes a look at the inner workings of Holmes, who is currently serving a sentence for wire fraud and conspiracy.
Street Fighter made about $30 million in the United States, with the other $20 million-plus coming from international markets. With an estimated production budget of $82 million, excluding marketing and promotion costs, Street Fighter still has a lot of ground to make up if it is to become a commercial success.
The movie has received mixed reviews from fans and critics, sitting at a 40% critics' score and a 79% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Some fans felt that many of the characters weren't well-developed and that several of the fight scenes were way too short.
There was praise for some of the cast, including Andrew Schulz, who was a controversial pick to play Dan Hibiki. However, he apparently performed well in the movie and played his role effectively.
There are hopes for a Street Fighter sequel, but a lot will depend on how the movie performs in the coming weeks.
