When the Game Awards 2023 event rolled around, Sega sent mysterious packages to some huge influencers within the FGC which prompted a lot of talk and excitement for the possible announcement for a new Virtua Fighter game.
It turned out that Sega were planning to announce the revival of a slew of their old property many of which a well loved by fans including Jet Set Radio. While this was not the news fans might have hoped for, it did cause a lot of excitement regardless.
Now, in an interview with the Washington Post, the Co-Chief Operating Officer and Sega of America CEO Shuji Utsumi stated that there is some serious consideration in-house of a new Virtua Fighter.
The game has been on ice for two decades causing fans to clamor for a new iteration.
According to Utsumi, the major consideration for a new Virtua Fighter is how to make it more exciting for a younger audience. This is because Virtua Fighter, like Tekken, is a lot more grounded in reality than the likes of Street Fighter and Guilty Gear, so a lot of the fighting is very realistic and this could possibly be a turn off to modern audiences.
While we await a new Virtua Fighter, the game did release in 2021 as a remaster of Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown
