There's only one thing better than playing video games. It's watching how many other people are playing a video game to prove to others how bad or great said game is. Nothing comes close to the thrill of a game you don't like dipping into double digits, while amazing new favorite of yours is staying above 100k for weeks. Now that is real gaming.
Jokes aside, it seems like PlayStation is getting a new widget that will reveal how many people are playing certain (as it's not active for all of them) games. This news first came about thanks to a video from a YouTuber named Mystic who covered a lot of PlayStation news, including this particular addition.
If you thought it would be weird for Sony to finally start showing player numbers, you are onto something, there is a big caveat here.
The player numbers are not concurrent, but rather "weekly active users" and only covers top 10 games. This is not too different from stats that Mat Piscattella of Circana tends to share now and then. These lists are never particularly interesting because for months and in some cases years they have been dominated by the same multiplayer and live service games.
However, this widget does provide more specific numbers of WAUs, which can be algorithmically converted to approximate some sort of CCU if someone is curious enough to do so.
This widget also comes along with an arguably more interesting option that will show currently trending games. Instead of active users, these will display a percentage increase in playtime or played matches, which might help to shine a spotlight on more games and trends.
