Saudi-Backed Investment Firm Acquires Up to 5% Stake in Capcom
More of the FGC is reliant on Saudi than ever

The Electronic Gaming Development Company (EGDC), an investment outfit owned by the MiSK Foundation (also known as the Mohammed bin Salman Foundation), has revealed that it has purchased up to 5% of the outstanding shares in Capcom.

The disclosure was made through an official investment report in which the firm confirmed its minority stake in the Japanese game developer.

Saudi Arabia’s Growing Presence in Fighting Games

The move represents another step in Saudi Arabia’s increasing involvement in the fighting game industry.

In 2022, Saudi Arabia acquired a 96.18% stake in SNK, the historic developer behind several fighting game franchises. The company would later release Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves in 2025, marking the return of the long-running series.

Saudi-backed organizations have also become involved in major fighting game events. Through affiliated entities, Saudi Arabia has gained control of the Evolution Championship Series (Evo), the world’s largest fighting game tournament. Organizers have already announced plans to expand Evo to as many as nine events globally starting in 2027.

When EGDC filed its report disclosing the Capcom share purchase, the firm listed its purpose for the investment as “pure investment.”

This classification generally indicates that the investor does not intend to influence company management and is instead seeking returns through stock value growth, game sales, and other revenue streams generated by Capcom.

Existing Ties Through the Esports World Cup

Saudi Arabia is already connected to Capcom through the Esports World Cup, which features Street Fighter 6 as one of its competitive titles.

Capcom and the Esports World Cup Foundation announced a three-year partnership in 2025, further linking the publisher’s fighting game ecosystem with Saudi Arabia’s rapidly expanding esports initiatives.

The MiSK Foundation, established in 2011, has been a key part of Saudi Arabia’s efforts to develop esports and gaming infrastructure within the country.

These investments form part of a broader strategy aimed at positioning Saudi Arabia as a global hub for gaming and esports in the coming years.
